POLYTONE
Research project and dissertation on the sound dimension of our domestic objects
Switches and door handles
Solo project
2024–2025
3D-printed prototype, oak, brass, copper, stainless steel, paper
Sound plays a clear role in our daily lives—it shapes our experiences, emotions, and actions. Yet everyday products rarely benefit from rich and intentional sound design.
How can we propose new sound treatments in our everyday environments to diversify our soundscapes, enrich user experiences, and cultivate daily listening?
Polytone is a family of interior accessories that places sensory experience at the heart of its approach. It explores the subtle interactions between material, movement, and sound, turning ordinary moments into sensitive experiences. It focuses on mundane objects and, through colour, texture, gesture, and sound, offers them a new place within our everyday landscapes.
THEORETICAL RESEARCH
What are the different possible fields of action? In what context should the research be anchored?
The sound treatment of everyday objects within the morning routine.
SOUND EXPERIMENTATIONS
How can we experiment with sounds and gestures?
Creation of a sound library through manipulable models. Association of gestures, sounds and sensations using simple material assemblies.
CREATIVE RESEARCH
Among the identified objects, which are the most common in domestic spaces? Which offer enough material qualities to allow iterations? How, through simple mechanical principles and forms, can we propose a different sound dimension for these objects?
Work on the switch and the door handle. Creative iterations through drawing and modelling.
EXISTING
How can we stand out from the white plastic switch that populates our homes? With which materials and forms can we design a door handle that truly stands out?
PROTOTYPES – Polytone
Prototyping of several concepts of multimodal door handles and switches. Oak, PLA 3D printing, paper, brass, copper, stainless steel.
Each module produces a different sound through various gestures and mechanical processes.
